The Wendy's Order You Do Not Have To Customize
One sandwich on the Wendy's board carries 57 grams of protein and 60 grams of fat. Another carries 34 grams of protein for a fraction of that, and it costs nothing extra to order. Coach Brian walks the menu item by item and hands you the order that works.
Wendy's is the one menu in this series where the winning order needs no changes at the register. You order a sandwich exactly as it comes and the numbers work. Episode 154 ranks eight real orders and names the one worth ordering.
The Twist On This Menu
Brian opens on the name over the door. Dave Thomas named the chain after his daughter Wendy. Years later he said he should have named it after himself, because putting a child's face on thousands of restaurants put real pressure on a kid who never asked for it.
That is the story behind the sign. The story behind the food is the one this episode is about.
Most menus in this series reward a modification. Order it protein style, ask for no rice, hold the sauce. Wendy's does not work that way. A normal sandwich ordered exactly as it comes is the biggest winner on the board, and the skill here is picking the right one.
Eight Real Orders, Ranked One to Ten
Brian ranks these worst to best. Every figure below is the one he states on the recording.
Small Fries
260 calories with 4 grams of protein. Fat is 12 grams and carbs are 35.
Brian scores it two out of ten. Almost all of that is fat and carbs.
His rule on fries at any of these places is to pass on them.
Small Chocolate Frosty
350 calories with about 10 grams of protein. Fat is 9 grams and carbs are 58.
The protein comes from the dairy. The carbs come mostly from sugar.
This is a real dessert and it is loaded with sugar. Dipping fries in it is a habit worth dropping.
Baconator
920 calories in one sandwich. It carries 57 grams of protein and 60 grams of fat, with 1,500 milligrams of sodium.
Brian scores it four out of ten. The protein number is strong and the fat number is the problem.
His own daily fat target for a man losing fat is 50 to 60 grams, or nearer 70 for someone a lot more active. Maintenance runs 60 to 80. One sandwich at 60 grams uses the whole day, which leaves you eating nothing with fat in it until tomorrow.
The federal sodium limit for adults is less than 2,300 milligrams a day. The ideal limit drops to 1,500 milligrams for men with high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease or a heart condition. This sandwich reaches that lower limit on its own.
Dave's Single Cheeseburger
570 calories with 29 grams of protein and 34 grams of fat. Sodium is 1,000 milligrams.
Brian calls this the twist he found on the menu. The closest match by size at McDonald's is the Quarter Pounder with cheese rather than a regular cheeseburger, which is built on a smaller patty.
The two land close enough that neither is a real trade for the other. Both carry a lot of calories, a lot of fat and a lot of sodium.
Small Chili
240 calories with 16 grams of protein and 11 grams of fat. Sodium lands at 900 to 1,000 milligrams.
This is the one Brian would eat here. Paired with a baked potato it holds you for three or four hours.
Sodium is the catch again, the same as everywhere else on this menu.
Garden Side Salad
25 calories. That is the whole story, and it is why this one sits at number six rather than higher.
A cup of lettuce runs three to seven calories depending on the type. A whole gallon bag of spinach is 60 calories.
Most men grab a few leaves and call it a salad. You would need to empty the entire bag into the bowl before it counted as food.
A garden salad works once you build on it. Add grilled chicken, or pour the chili over it, and it becomes a meal.
Junior Chocolate Frosty
200 calories with 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat. Carbs are 33.
The Frosty makes this list twice. The junior size is the one that fits a fat loss day.
Brian's ceiling for a sweet treat is 100 to 200 calories, or 300 at the outside. The junior lands inside that and the small does not.
For scale, a McFlurry with M&M's runs almost 600 calories. The junior Frosty is about a third of that.
Grilled Chicken Sandwich
34 grams of protein with 10 grams of fat. Sodium is around 800 milligrams.
Brian scores it nine out of ten and calls it the best order on the menu. Chicken carries less fat than beef, and that is the whole reason it wins here.
Order it grilled rather than breaded. That one word at the register is the difference.
If you want a bigger meal, order two and eat them as a double chicken sandwich. The sodium doubles with it.
Your Order, Written Down
Grilled chicken sandwich. Ask for it grilled and not breaded.
If you want more than a sandwich, take the small chili with a baked potato instead. That pair runs lighter than the Baconator and holds you longer.
Pass on the fries.
Fresh, Never Frozen
Wendy's built the brand on beef that never goes into a freezer. The company states that publicly and it is what the chain is known for. Farm to grill is the promise on the board.
Fresh beef is a real difference in the kitchen. It changes nothing about the calories, the fat or the sodium on the board.
The Fast Five
Why are Wendy's burgers square? Dave Thomas shaped the patty so the corners hang past the edge of a round bun. The point was to show the company does not cut corners on beef.
Where did the name come from? Dave Thomas's daughter is Melinda Lou. Wendy was the name that stuck from how she said it as a child, and it went on the sign.
Was Dave Thomas on television himself? He appeared in hundreds of his own commercials over more than a decade, which is why so many men over 40 picture his face when they hear the name.
What is the real protein play here? Take the classic chicken sandwich and add a second chicken patty. That lands at 750 calories with 51 grams of protein.
What was on the first Wendy's menu? The chain opened in 1969 and the Frosty was one of the original items. Dave built it thick enough to need a spoon, and it is blended with vanilla rather than being pure chocolate.
Where This Matters
A single stop at Wendy's changes nothing over a year. Order what you want and fit it into the day.
The pattern is what moves the scale. The same 920-calorie sandwich twice a week is a different problem from the same sandwich twice a year.
This menu holds both ends of the range. One sandwich carries 57 grams of protein and a full day of fat. Another carries 34 grams of protein for a fraction of it.
Why Men Start This
Every man has his own reason and the general ones repeat. Getting his energy back. Being the man his family counts on.
Brian recorded two of those stories the week this episode went out. Joe held his results together through two separate stretches of travel. Pablo did it while running a demanding career, finishing postgraduate study and traveling repeatedly.
Both of their episodes are coming later in the run.
