The Chipotle Order That Fits a Fat Loss Day
The bowl that sounds like the healthiest thing on the Chipotle menu runs 820 calories with 26 grams of protein. A chicken build on the same counter runs about 660 calories with 50 grams. Coach Brian walks that line item by item and hands you one order to keep for good.
Chipotle is one of the most common lunch stops for the men Coach Brian coaches. It looks like the smart call next to a drive-thru, and most of the damage still happens at the counter. Episode 145 opens the restaurant series with one order you can say out loud every time you walk in.
Why the Counter Decides This
Brian's stance on fast casual restaurants is that they get blamed for damage they do not cause. The ingredients are fresh and nothing comes out from under a heat lamp. What costs a man his week is the order he places on autopilot. He builds the same bowl every visit because it tastes good and he has never checked what is in it.
This episode starts a series. Each one covers a single restaurant from walking in to walking out, with one trap to avoid and one better order. Brian wants 20 restaurants covered across the next 20 episodes.
The Bowl That Sounds Like the Healthiest Thing on the Menu
Build a bowl with sofritas, brown rice, pinto beans, fajita veggies, corn salsa and guacamole on top. Every one of those is a good food. That bowl runs 820 calories with 26 grams of protein, and that is before anyone gets heavy handed with the rice or the beans.
Now put a chicken bowl next to it on the same counter. Keep the brown rice and the pinto beans. Add cheese and chili sauce in place of the corn salsa. That bowl runs about 660 calories with 50 grams of protein. It wins on both ends at the same time, with fewer calories and close to double the protein.
The words plant based are doing the selling. They have nothing to do with the rice sitting under it or the beans mixed through it. Your brain reads one term and credits the whole plate. Nothing in that bowl is bad food. The carbohydrate load and the fat riding on the guacamole are what move the number.
Brian has no problem with sofritas. Take beans instead of rice as the starchy carb and skip the wrap, and that plate lines up with a fat loss day.
Where the Rest of the Calories Hide
The flour tortilla runs about 300 calories. Order a burrito instead of a bowl and you have spent close to a third of the meal on the wrapper before anything goes inside it. It is the single most calorie dense item on the board.
The vinaigrette adds about 220 calories, because it is built on fat rather than vinegar. It also carries 850 milligrams of sodium in a serving. Most men never ask what is in the dressing before they pour it on.
A two serving bag of chips runs 400 to 500 calories on its own. One tortilla chip is around 15 calories and they multiply faster than anyone counts. Add guacamole or queso and the bag clears 500 or 600.
The specialty lemonades run over 200 calories in the cup. Stack the sofritas bowl with chips and a drink and lunch clears 1,200 calories. That is the lunch that leaves a man foggy at two or three in the afternoon while he thinks he ate well.
Rice earns its own line. A cup of cooked rice is about 200 calories. Eat here a couple of times a week and the rice alone changes the shape of your week.
The Better Order
Start with the base. A salad base fits a lower activity day or a day when you are eating carbs at your other meals. A bowl with some rice fits a light carb breakfast and a day with a lot of movement. Skip the tortilla either way.
Then the protein. A standard serving of meat runs 35 to 45 grams of protein. Chicken is the biggest win on that counter. You can order double, and you can ask the person serving you for a little more.
Then the volume. Take double fajitas for the peppers and onions, which bring fiber and food volume at low calories. Run the mild and medium salsa for flavor. A cup of salsa is around 30 calories. Pile the vegetables high, because your stomach reads volume long before it reads calories. Every topping past that adds 50 to 100 or more calories depending on the scoop.
Then choose between rice and beans. Beans bring the fiber and a little more protein. Rice is the higher calorie choice for the same space in the bowl.
Skip the dressing. That one move removes the calories and the sodium in a single step, and the salsa carries the flavor without it. None of this needs a special request or an awkward conversation at the counter. Everything here is already on the line.
On a bed of lettuce that build lands around 300 to 400 calories. On beans and rice it runs 600 to 800, which is still a number that fits a normal day.
Two Orders You Can Say Out Loud
Brian orders carnitas for himself, double carnitas, with beans and a little rice. He piles on tomatoes and pico and takes the red salsa for the heat. He adds a little corn, since a cup of corn is about 140 calories against about 200 for a cup of rice. He skips the guacamole and the cheese because both multiply the fat.
Here is the order to memorize. Salad, double chicken, double fajita peppers, mild and medium salsa, pico, no dressing. That walks out at around 400 to 500 calories with 40 to 50 grams of protein or more on the double serving. Add corn if you want the extra volume. Doubling the meat costs you a little at the register and the rest of it costs nothing.
A meal like that should hold you three to five hours without eating into the fat loss you are working for.
The Fast Five
Brian brought the Fast Five segment back for this episode. Five questions with five quick answers.
What is the real calorie range on a scoop of guacamole? Roughly 100 to 250 calories, depending on how heavy handed the person behind the counter is that day. It is real food and it is real fat. One avocado carries 330 calories and 29 grams of fat.
What is the fastest way to control your portion without saying an extra word at the counter? Order in the app before you walk in. You pick light, regular or heavy on each item and the app runs the macros while you build it. Brian has watched app orders come out smaller than counter orders more than once.
What single move turns one trip into two meals? Build a bigger bowl on purpose, around 1,000 calories, and eat half at noon and half in the late afternoon. That covers six or seven hours and leaves the rest of your day easy to balance at dinner.
Which two toppings add up fastest without you noticing? Sour cream and cheese. A quarter cup of cheese is about 100 calories and a dollop of sour cream runs around 50.
What is Chipotle's own general calorie target for a man's order? About 600 calories. The sofritas bowl from the top of this episode clears that by more than 200 before anything else goes on the tray.
Run the Order Like a Budget
Ordering here works the same way a P&L works in your business. You need to know the budget before you spend it. Brian's general target for one Chipotle meal is around 500 calories with 40 to 50 grams of protein, 40 to 50 grams of carbohydrate and 20 grams of fat or less.
The nutrition calculator on Chipotle's site and the build screen in their app both give you those numbers before you order. Whatever you build in the app will not match the bowl exactly, because a person is scooping it. That is fine. The point is knowing the range before the line starts moving. If you want the label reading version of this, Brian covered how to read a nutrition label in episode 74.
A man can eat at Chipotle every day and still lose fat. Brian has had clients do exactly that. Cut the extras that add 500 or more calories to a visit and the place turns into an ally instead of a problem.

How many calories is a sofritas bowl at Chipotle?
